A Look at Generation X
June 30th, 2011Those people who have the distinction of being born between 1965 and 1975 are known as Generation X. People in the ‘40 and ’50s left behind a lot of pieces for Generation X to pick up. They decided to modify their culture since it was faced with drug, economic, and disease problems. After all, they felt nothing but dissatisfaction at the world that was being left to them by their forebears. Douglas Copeland wrote a book in 1991 that gave this generation their name.
As with many groups that came before them, exers became known for their own kinds of music. Their music became more realistic and represented the times they lived in. Gangsta and grunge were among the popular choice. Gangsta rap also discussed things like police brutality. Kurt Cobain headed the grunge movement. After his unfortunate demise in , generation x lost their sense of direction for awhile as they regrouped and put their world back together again.
These years reflected not only concern about the past but hope for the future. Many people stopped viewing marriage as a sacred institutions as the soaring divorce rates suggested. AIDS took the world by storm also. Many people found themselves unemployed or homeless, while others were addicted to various drugs. People thought Generation Xers were slackers who wanted immediate gratification in the form of extreme sports and the rave subculture. This was a generation that had truly lost its way as Don Mclean sang in “American Pie”.
Since these labels don’t tell the complete truth, many people scoff at the labels they were given. In actuality, Generation Xers tend to become much more involved in civic activities than the generation which followed them. Only the baby boomers are more like to donate to food and clothing operations, volunteer to work at charitable pursuits, and to vote than those of Generation X. Doc No.kslhwde-sdtlgh
