bed bugs

i was changing the sheets on my bed (i change them about once or twice a week) and noticed my mattress was wearing unevenly. my mattress is about 10 months-ish old. i flipped it around, and noticed a tiny bug on the seam that was lying flat against the box spring. it was dead, and there was only one. i looked it up and it was a bed bug….. ughh. i think of myself as a relatively clean person… i wash my sheets at least once a week and bleach them. i vacuum my bedroom everyother day… how can i have bed bugs??? please tell me any ways to keep them away, i’m completely grossed out.
i havent visited a hotel in years, are there any low-chemical ways of dealing with them.

If you have ever visited a hotel you could have brought some these unwanted guests home in your luggage. It has little to do with how clean of a person you are.

They are very hard to get rid of once they establish themselves. Start checking along the seams of the matress, look into the crevices where the box spring sits on the frame, check along your baseboards where the carpet meets the wall. bed bugs are very good at hiding. If you locate more call a professional exterminator ASAP.

When I lived in an apartment building, a downstairs tenant brought bed bugs home with them presumably from staying at a hotel, but luckily they were never found in my apt. As a precaution, the exterminator had to come several to times and treat all of the apartments. You have to remove all family members and pets for the day, until the air clears. It will take several visits to be sure that the pests are gone. It is a hassle, but worth it. I feel for you because I know how bad I was freaking out at the possibility that there might be bugs in my old apt. Good luck!
